A foyer chandelier is usually an ornate ceiling-mounted fixture with arms or structure holding light fixtures. The very ornate chandeliers will have numerous lights and complex arrays of glass shapes to scatter light all around the room creating attractive patterns on the walls, floor and ceiling. Foyer chandeliers have become very popular parts of the McMansions being built across the country today.
Chandeliers date well back in time and were used in medieval churches and abbeys where they held candles to light the hallways and large rooms. Originally made of wood, metal became widely used for chandeliers and had the added bonus of being fireproof.
In the 15th century, chandeliers became more complex and the ring or crown design became popular. They were often found in homes of the wealthy, and in palaces. The chandelier is a symbol of status. Moving into the 18th century the chandelier was found in many homes of the common class and was no longer something that only the wealthy could afford.
